What is Emerald?

Emerald is the green variety of beryl, coloured by chromium and/or vanadium. Almost all emeralds contain inclusions, affectionately called the jardin ("garden"). Colombia has produced the most famous emeralds for centuries, from mines such as Muzo and Chivor; Zambia is now another major source.

Ancient Egypt mined emeralds as early as around 330 BCE, and Cleopatra is famous for her love of them. Most emeralds are treated with oils or resins to improve clarity – a long-accepted practice.
