What is Aventurine?

Aventurine is a quartz rock (quartzite) with tiny flat inclusions that make it sparkle – an effect called aventurescence. In green aventurine the glittering flakes are fuchsite, a chromium-rich mica.

The name comes from the Italian a ventura, "by chance" – it was borrowed from goldstone, a sparkly glass reputedly made by accident in Venice. Most green aventurine comes from India.
