What is Clear Quartz?

Clear quartz, or rock crystal, is pure silicon dioxide. Quartz is one of the most common minerals in Earth's crust and forms six-sided crystals with pointed tips in veins, cavities and pegmatites.

The ancient Greeks called it krystallos, believing it was ice that had frozen permanently – the origin of our word "crystal". Quartz is also piezoelectric: it produces a tiny electric charge under pressure, which is why quartz oscillators keep time in watches and electronics.
