What is Topaz?

Topaz is an aluminium silicate containing fluorine and is the reference mineral for 8 on the Mohs scale. Golden-orange "imperial" topaz from Ouro Preto, Brazil, is the most prized. Most blue topaz sold today is colourless topaz that has been irradiated and heated to create the blue colour.

The name may come from Topazios, an ancient name for Zabargad island in the Red Sea – which, confusingly, produced peridot rather than topaz. Topaz is a birthstone for November, alongside citrine.
