What is Sodalite?

Sodalite is a sodium-rich silicate – its name refers to its sodium content. First described in 1811 from Greenland, it's usually royal blue with white veins of calcite.

Large deposits near Bancroft, Ontario, became famous after a royal visit in 1901: sodalite was shipped to London to decorate Marlborough House, giving it the nickname "Princess Blue". Sodalite is often confused with lapis lazuli, but it rarely contains gold pyrite flecks.
