What is Pearl?

Pearls are grown by oysters and mussels. When an irritant gets inside the shell, the mollusc coats it in layer after layer of nacre – tiny crystals of aragonite held together by an organic protein. The overlapping layers create a pearl's glowing lustre.

Natural pearls are extremely rare. Almost all pearls sold today are cultured: a technique perfected in Japan in the early 1900s, famously by Kokichi Mikimoto, where a bead or tissue is placed in the mollusc to start the pearl. Types include Akoya, South Sea, Tahitian and freshwater pearls. Pearl is a birthstone for June.

How to care for Pearl

Pearls are soft and delicate. Put them on last and take them off first; keep away from perfume, hairspray, cosmetics and acids. Wipe with a soft cloth after wearing and store flat, separate from other jewellery.
