What is Labradorite?

Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar famous for its labradorescence – flashes of blue, green, gold and even purple that appear as you turn the stone. The effect is caused by light interfering in extremely thin layers inside the crystal.

It was described from Labrador, Canada, in the late 1700s. Much of today's labradorite comes from Madagascar, while Finland produces an intensely colourful type called spectrolite.
