What is Carnelian?

Carnelian is orange to red chalcedony, coloured by iron oxides. It has been used for more than 4,000 years: ancient Egyptians set it in jewellery and amulets, and Roman signet rings were often carved in carnelian because hot wax doesn't stick to it.

India has been the classic source for millennia. Much commercial carnelian today is heat-treated or dyed agate, which deepens the orange colour.
