What is Citrine?

Citrine is the yellow to orange variety of quartz, coloured by traces of iron. Natural citrine is rare. Most citrine on the market – especially clusters with deep orange tips and white bases – is heat-treated amethyst or smoky quartz. Both are real quartz; natural citrine is usually paler and more even in colour.

The name comes from citron, the French word for lemon. Citrine is a birthstone for November, alongside topaz.
