Ametrine

A rare natural blend of amethyst and citrine in one crystal, mined almost entirely in Bolivia.

What is Ametrine?

Ametrine is quartz with zones of purple amethyst and golden citrine in the same crystal. The two colours form because of differences in iron and temperature conditions as different parts of the crystal grew.

Almost all natural ametrine comes from the Anahí mine in eastern Bolivia, and it only became widely available in the 1970s–80s. Legend says the mine was part of a dowry when a Spanish conquistador married an Ayoreo princess named Anahí in the 1600s.

Some ametrine on the market is lab-grown or produced by treating amethyst, so reputable sourcing matters.

  • Dim the lights and light a lavender or chamomile candle.
  • Light sandalwood or lavender incense and take five slow breaths.
  • Hold your crystal in your palm while you let the day go, then place it on your bedside table.
  • Blow out the candle before you sleep.

Is ametrine natural?

Natural ametrine exists and comes mainly from Bolivia's Anahí mine, but lab-grown and treated material also exists.

Why does ametrine have two colours?
