What is Amber?

Amber is not a mineral at all but fossilised tree resin. Resin that oozed from ancient trees was buried, and over millions of years lost its volatile oils and hardened. Baltic amber is roughly 35–45 million years old, and some amber preserves insects, plant fragments and even feathers.

The Baltic Sea coast is the world's largest source, and amber was traded across Europe along the ancient "Amber Road". Amber is warm to the touch, very light, and floats in salty water.

Because it is valuable, amber is often imitated with plastic, glass or copal (younger, not fully fossilised resin).

Amber is very soft and sensitive. Keep it away from heat, perfume, hairspray, alcohol and cleaning products. Wipe with a soft damp cloth only; never use ultrasonic cleaners. Store separately so harder stones don't scratch it.
