Tiger's Eye

What is Tiger's Eye?

Tiger's eye is quartz with fibrous inclusions that create chatoyancy – a silky band of light that moves like a cat's eye. Its golden-brown colour comes from iron oxide; the blue-grey version, hawk's eye, retains more of the original blue fibres.

It was long described as quartz replacing blue asbestos (crocidolite) fibres. Research published in 2003 showed a more complex "crack-seal" process, where quartz and fibres grew together as cracks repeatedly opened and filled. The fibres are sealed within the quartz, so polished tiger's eye is safe to handle. Most comes from South Africa.
