What is Aquamarine?

Aquamarine is the blue to blue-green variety of beryl – the same mineral species as emerald. Its colour comes from iron. It forms large, clean hexagonal crystals, mainly in granite pegmatites, and Brazil's Minas Gerais has produced some enormous gem crystals.

The name comes from the Latin aqua marina, "sea water". Sailors traditionally carried aquamarine as a charm for safe passage and calm seas.
