What is Fluorite?

Fluorite is calcium fluoride and the reference mineral for 4 on the Mohs scale. It forms perfect cubes and octahedra and often shows bands of purple, green and blue ("rainbow fluorite").

Many fluorites glow under ultraviolet light – the word fluorescence was coined from fluorite in 1852. The name itself comes from the Latin fluere, "to flow", because it was used as a flux in metal smelting. England's banded Blue John from Derbyshire is a famous historic variety.

Fluorite is soft (4) with perfect cleavage – avoid knocks, heat and rough cleaning. Some colours can fade in sunlight. Wipe with a soft damp cloth.
