What is Apatite?

Apatite is a group of calcium phosphate minerals. It is so common in nature that it is the reference mineral for 5 on the Mohs hardness scale. A form of apatite (hydroxylapatite) is the main mineral in human bones and tooth enamel.

The name comes from the Greek apatao, "to deceive", because apatite was easily confused with other minerals such as beryl and tourmaline. The bright blue tumbled stones sold today come mainly from Madagascar.
