What is Rhodonite?

Rhodonite is a manganese silicate, usually rose-pink with black veins of manganese oxide. The name, like rhodochrosite's, comes from the Greek rhodon, "rose".

The Ural Mountains of Russia produced massive rhodonite used in imperial art – including the sarcophagus of Empress Maria Alexandrovna in St Petersburg. Transparent gem crystals come from Broken Hill, Australia. Rhodonite is also the state gem of Massachusetts.
