What is Prasiolite (Green Amethyst)?

Prasiolite is green quartz. Natural prasiolite is rare; most on the market is amethyst that has been heat-treated, which changes its colour to pale green. The name comes from the Greek for "leek-green". It is often sold as "green amethyst", but since it isn't purple, gemmologists prefer the name prasiolite.
