What is Malachite?

Malachite is a copper carbonate that forms where copper deposits weather. Its striking light and dark green bands make every piece unique. It was ground into green pigment in ancient Egypt and used as eye paint.

The Ural Mountains of Russia once produced huge masses of malachite: the Malachite Room of the Winter Palace (Hermitage) and the columns of St Isaac's Cathedral in St Petersburg are decorated with it. Today most malachite comes from the DR Congo. The name comes from the Greek malache, "mallow", a green-leaved plant.

How to care for Malachite

Malachite is soft and sensitive to acids, heat and water. Never use it in drinking water. Wipe with a dry cloth. Raw malachite dust shouldn't be inhaled – don't sand or cut it at home.
