What is Bloodstone?

Bloodstone, also called heliotrope, is dark green chalcedony or jasper with spots of red iron oxide. Most material comes from India.

Its older name heliotrope comes from Greek words meaning "sun-turning" – ancient writers believed it turned the sun's reflection red when placed in water. In medieval Europe, a Christian legend said the red spots were drops of Christ's blood, and bloodstone was carved into religious scenes.
