What is Amazonite?

Amazonite is the green to blue-green variety of microcline, a potassium feldspar. Its colour is linked to small amounts of lead and water in the crystal structure. Fine crystals often grow alongside smoky quartz, most famously in the Pikes Peak area of Colorado.

Despite its name, there are no known amazonite deposits along the Amazon River – the name likely came from confusion with other green stones from the region. Amazonite beads and amulets have been found in ancient Egypt, where it was used in jewellery and inlays.

How to care for Amazonite

Amazonite has perfect cleavage, so it can crack if knocked. Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, dry immediately, and avoid heat and long periods in strong sunlight.
