What is Prehnite?

Prehnite is a calcium aluminium silicate with a soft, translucent green glow. It often contains black needles of epidote. It was named in 1788 after Hendrik von Prehn, a Dutch colonel who brought specimens from the Cape of Good Hope – often cited as the first mineral named after a person.

Prehnite typically forms in cavities of volcanic rocks. Popular tumbled and bead material comes from Australia and Mali.
