What is Emerald?

Emerald is the green variety of beryl, coloured by chromium and/or vanadium. Almost all emeralds contain inclusions, affectionately called the jardin ("garden"). Colombia has produced the most famous emeralds for centuries, from mines such as Muzo and Chivor; Zambia is now another major source.

Ancient Egypt mined emeralds as early as around 330 BCE, and Cleopatra is famous for her love of them. Most emeralds are treated with oils or resins to improve clarity – a long-accepted practice.

Although hard, emerald is often included and oil-treated. Clean with lukewarm soapy water only; avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, heat and harsh chemicals.

  • Clear the space with a little palo santo smoke.
  • Light a rose or vanilla candle and place your crystal in front of it.
  • Light rose or jasmine incense and write down three things you appreciate about yourself or someone you love.
  • Keep the crystal with your note, or carry it with you during the week.

Safety: never leave candles, incense or smudge sticks burning unattended, keep them away from children, pets and anything flammable, and ventilate the room. Rituals are shared as tradition, not as a treatment.
